ABOUT BAEK
"HIS MUSICAL NATURE IS PROFOUND, HIS UNDERSTANDING AND ACCEPTANCE OF HERITAGE COMPLETE."

Violinist Baek Kim (BK) is a Juilliard-trained violinist and educator dedicated to helping students develop exceptional technique, artistry, and confidence through personalized instruction. His teaching combines world-class musical training with a thoughtful, analytical approach that makes even the most challenging aspects of violin playing clear, practical, and accessible.
Baek's musical journey began at the age of seven when he won the Grand Prize in South Korea's prestigious Music Monthly Competition. By eight, he was performing throughout Korea and Japan, and at nine he began studying at The Juilliard School under legendary violin pedagogue Dorothy DeLay. His studies later continued with internationally renowned artists including Kyung-Wha Chung, Mihaela Martin, and Mariana Sirbu, while participating in masterclasses with distinguished musicians such as Itzhak Perlman and Rosa Fain.
As a performer, Baek has appeared at renowned venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Aspen Music Festival, as well as throughout Europe and Asia. Highlights include a seven-city tour with the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie performing Beethoven's Violin Concerto and a critically acclaimed Carnegie Hall recital, where New York Concert Review praised his performance:
"His musical nature is profound, his understanding and acceptance of heritage complete."
In 2008, Baek was diagnosed with focal dystonia, a neurological movement disorder that dramatically affected his left hand. Rather than ending his musical journey, the experience transformed his understanding of technique, learning, and resilience. Through years of rebuilding his playing, he developed a deeper appreciation for efficient practice, thoughtful problem-solving, and the importance of understanding why technique works—not simply how to imitate it. These principles remain central to his teaching today.
Alongside his performing career, Baek leads BK Violin Studios, where he teaches students of all ages and experience levels—from beginners to advanced musicians and working professionals. Whether lessons take place online or in person in Bergen County, his goal is to help every student build lasting technical excellence, artistic confidence, and a lifelong love of music.
Baek performs on a 2004 Stefan-Peter Greiner violin.
