Baek Kim

Baek Kim is a violinist and teacher whose training began at Juilliard Pre-College with Dorothy DeLay. His lessons combine close technical observation with clear explanations of how movement, sound and musical intent work together.

Baek's musical journey began at the age of seven when he won the Grand Prize in South Korea's prestigious Music Monthly Competition. By eight, he was performing throughout Korea and Japan, and at nine he began studying at The Juilliard School under legendary violin pedagogue Dorothy DeLay. His studies later continued with internationally renowned artists including Kyung-Wha Chung, Mihaela Martin and Mariana Sirbu, while participating in masterclasses with distinguished musicians such as Itzhak Perlman and Rosa Fain.

As a performer, Baek has appeared at renowned venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the Aspen Music Festival, as well as throughout Europe and Asia. Highlights include a seven-city tour with the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie performing Beethoven's Violin Concerto and a critically acclaimed Carnegie Hall recital.

In 2008, Baek was diagnosed with focal dystonia, a neurological movement disorder that dramatically affected his left hand. Rather than ending his musical journey, the experience transformed his understanding of technique, learning and resilience. Through years of rebuilding his playing, he developed a deeper appreciation for efficient practice, thoughtful problem-solving, and the importance of understanding why technique works - not simply how to imitate it. These principles remain central to his teaching today.

Alongside his performing career, Baek leads BK Violin Studios, teaching young musicians, adult learners and working professionals who already have experience on the violin. Lessons take place online worldwide and in person in Bergen County, with work shaped around each student’s technique, repertoire and goals.
